What executive coaching is…and isn’t
IT IS impactful
The effects of executive coaching can be nearly immediate because there’s no new information for the client to learn—they are already the subject matter experts for their situation. Coaching helps leaders get to their decision points quickly and provides objective, third-party interactions that aren’t tied to any spheres of influence. As a result, coaching clients can quickly cut through the clutter—the “mental garbage”—that’s keeping them from reaching their true potential.
IT IS RECOGNIZED AND RESPECTED
Executive coaching has been around for decades, and more and more organizational leaders have experienced the benefits of having an impartial party available to help them articulate their goals, discover their inherent strengths, and navigate their unique path. REVELATOR Executive Coaching conforms to the Codes of Ethics and Conduct of the International Coach Federation (IFC), the premier credentialing body for executive coaching.
IT IS PERSONAL AND PERSONALIZED
Coaching is highly personal, so getting to know and understand the client is core to what we do. While the three-step REVELATOR coaching process is foundational, how that process plays out is completely dependent on the client’s situation, objectives, issues, and timeframe. That means that two executives in the same organization could receive simultaneous coaching and still require very different styles of coaching.
IT IS CONFIDENTIAL AND CANDID
Coaching is a ‘conversational cul de sac,’ meaning what comes into sessions does not come back out and is kept confidential between coach and client—even if the executive’s coaching is being paid for by the organization. This open, candid, two-way conversation is vital for coaching to be effective, providing the client with a safe and trusted environment to discuss challenges and concerns.
IT IS A PROCESS
While the impact of executive coaching may be quickly apparent, achieving lasting results will take time, with the ultimate goal to empower the client with the tools and confidence to move ahead on their own. Coaching terms varies by client and need, but typically ranges from a few months to a year or more.
IT iSn’T Therapy, mentoring or consulting
Simply put: therapy focuses on exploring the past; mentoring focuses on sharing experience; consulting focuses on providing direction. While coaching may leverage certain elements of one or all of these systems from time to time, true executive coaching puts the power in the hands of the client, providing the questions and insights to stay focused on forward progress.
IT ISN’T all ‘warm fuzzies’
If you wanted to summarize executive coaching in two words, ‘insights’ and ‘accountability’ would likely be at the top of the list. Executive coaching should not be confused with ‘life coaching’ or ‘career coaching.’ Executives at all levels—CEOs, VPs, directors, entrepreneurs—face increasingly competitive environments, with greater need for work performance and professional development. Executive coaching provides an impartial outside resource to help maintain focus, serve as a sounding board, and provide accountability in achieving tangible business goals. That means sometimes coaching can be uncomfortable—but then, true progress often is.
IT ISN’T GOING TO BE EASY
Sometimes coaching is a spotlight, highlighting what’s (deliberately!) hidden; sometimes it’s a sounding board, providing a dispassionate perspective; and sometimes it’s a mirror, reflecting back what’s clear to everyone but the client themselves. Regardless which one it is, coaching is a challenge—but a challenge that pushes leaders to shake off their contentment or insecurities and tap into their potential. Those who have embraced the idea of having an executive coach and who heed the insights they gain often find ripple effects far beyond achieving their business goals. It provides a renewed sense of empowerment, purpose, and worth that is truly transformative.
